all those men who went before
with all their secrets in a drawer
and all the songs that have been sang
that bell it cracked the notes they rang
they’re gonna lay that hammer down
its gonna pour we’re gonna drown
and I don’t mean to just complain
its just dear god, I hate the rain

The wind is howling at my door
and its getting harder anymore
to try to keep my baby warm
keep her safe within the storm
that hammer’s coming down i know
with rain and hail and ice and snow
guess I just needed to complain
the cash is low and so is the propane

that night I made my father cry
I saw the fear thats in his eye
put there by the men in charge
who gave him drugs and credit cards
they done laid that hammer down
the V.A. don’t like him coming round
and its on file that he complained
“they don’t do shit to ease the pain”

if i drink my pain away
will it go or will it stay
this whiskeys feeling pretty good
but not quite like i thought it would
so i’ll just lay that hammer down
cocaine’s the sweetest thing i’ve found
I’ve no need to just complain
give up the fight, cause the fight is all in vain

they’re gonna stop the rising sun
the night will start and the day won’t come
with all the bombs and all the guns
it’ll be about the biggest thing that man has ever done
so lets just lay that hammer down
stop the earth from spinning round
you won’t hear a soul complain
cause there ain’t a thing left to gain

i guess we’ve heard this all before
read all the books on all the wars
their melodies still lingering
that bell it cracked the songs we sing
If God lays that hammer down
its to grave or sky we’re bound
is that a myth or some cruel joke
made up so the poor could feign some hope?

Open up your eyes real wide
take a good long look around outside
we’re gonna freeze or burn but we’re surely gonna die
there shouldn’t really be any questions why
its our hate our lust our  filth and greed
taking everything we can instead of only what we need
I’m sure that hammer’s coming down
if you listen you can almost hear that sound
and I don’t mean to preach or complain
but it looks like a storms coming in and you can smell the rain
