Once Met a Girl

I once met a girl with the biggest eyes that I had ever seen
and we used to make love in that city by the sea
and she would always talk about how she was headed east
and so I went out there but never found myself at ease

I once met a girl who was a little bit too young
but had myself convinced that she was probably the one
and she would hold me tight and always beg me not to leave
but if I'd never tried I'd probably never been at peace

(chorus) and I've had more than my fair share and I've had more than a few
and so I just don't think I have got the right to hold you

I once kissed a girl who's very body it did burn
and from that single kiss a priceless lesson i did learn
and all my friends told me she'd feel it and when she did she would come around
and though I'm sure she felt it she never even sang me a single sound

(chorus)

I once met a girl who was from the dessert land
and I was lucky then to have even held her hand
but as my luck would go I was not her perfect man
but I am grateful for every second we shared and I would do it all again

(chorus)

Send the Bastard Running

There's a man with a plow in a field and he's trying grow his flowers
there's a man with a plow in a field in the afternoon sun
there's a man in the house by the field and he's trying to raise his children
and there's a man in the house next door and he's got a loaded gun

but I've got a bigger one, Oh and I can see him coming
yeah I've got a bigger gun, and I'm gonna send him running

There's a boy with a baseball bat and a glove on his left hand
there's a boy with a baseball bat in the afternoon sun
there's a man in the house by the field and he's trying to raise his children
and there's a man in the house next door and he's got a loaded gun

(chorus)

there's a girl with darker skin and a basket of flowers
there's a girl with darker skin in the afternoon sun
there's a man in the house by the field and he's trying to raise his children
and there's a man in the house next door and he's got a loaded gun

but daddy's got a bigger one, oh and I can see him coming
yeah I've got a bigger gun and I'm gonna send the bastard running

Necessary Casualties

I'm through raising my fists to the sky I think I'm gonna turn and shake em
at this other guy who sits at a desk and writes checks that constantly send our nation further into debt
and then sends, my father off to war till my poor, poor mother couldn't take it anymore and then says
he'll take my brother too so tell me what else am I supposed to do, what else am I supposed to do

cause I don't see your sons heading off to war
all I see are the sons of the laid off the jobless the poor
and I know you'll take all that you can and you don't care if it take every single god damn man their just
necessary casualties

You say that its all black and white there is no left there is only the right and if you
are on another side then you must be one of the bad guys, and you may very well deserve to die

chorus

Old Dusty Trail
(written by Andrew Anderson & Kaitlin Berreckman)

The screaming herdsmen in the dead of night
riding that 3 a.m. train
a brown paper bag and a bite to eat
take a little time to kill the pain
New York City won't you come and kill the pain

A crazy man on a lucky star
a pretty girl i never met
too many nights in those crowded bars in the land
of the Yankees and the Mets

And I can hear the road a calling
the drunken crowd a starts to brawling
oh, wait my mistake they are dancing
Go grab a girl lets go and join em

A failed attempt and a drunken night
playing in that bluegrass band
I threw up 3 times lets go and grab a bite
and walk from Philly's north to south end

I can hear the road a calling
the drunken crowd a starts to brawling
oh, how i wish that they were dancing
go grab a drink lets go and join em

they didn't know that they had white folks here
i didn't know where I was
but I've been thinking bout what Kaitlin said
about how I complain too much

my hats off to you but i gotta go
and hit that old dusty trail
and it don't matter anymore my girl
whether I succeed or fail

I can hear the road a calling
a drunken crowd of one I'm falling
oh, how I wish I was with you dancing
grab my guitar I'll go and join em...

A Year Tomorrow

I don't know why I ever left this place
and I don't know why I'd choose not to see your face everyday, everyday everyday

and I don't know how I ever was so sure
cause I don't know what I believe in anymore
now all i know is that I'm lonelier than sin
so come on darlin' won't you kiss me again

But I won't ever let you hurt me
like you did before, like you did before
and I won't ever let you do me
like you done before, like you done before

I don't know how we'd ever get that far
cause there is not much room there in your little car
lets face it baby we've got nowhere left to go
and there are still too many things that we don't know

(chorus)

All I know is that I'm lonelier than hell
and there is no way that this could work out too well

The Hawk

Well they called him the Hawk he looked all kinds of mean
he was the mangiest thing you'd think you ever coulda seen
and I'm scared that I just may share his fate

Cause he could play the guitar like nothin' else
but he always kept whiskey up on the shelf
and that hawk flew too early and not too late (2x)

there are a couple reasons I don't think it'll work
and one starts with me and one starts with her
and nothing ever goes the way that we had planned

and I could chase my shadow all around this world
but I could never, ever, ever, ever catch that girl
and that's why I may not make it home again,
no I may not make it back home again

But mamma I just don't want you to worry
and mamma I just don't want you to cry
so mamma its just best if you don't see me when I die
oh, when I die

And there's lots of things I'd still like to know
like they way he loved the curve of the road
and the way he lost his leg that summer day

and what about the way he came to know the Lord
and kept up the drink but gave up the sword
and all about the way he learned to pray
Sweet Jesus, I'd like to learn how to pray

but mamma I just don't want you to worry
and mamma I just don't want you to cry
so mamma its just best if you don't see me when I die
oh when I die

and mamma I just don't want you to notice
cause there are things you probably shouldn't know
so mamma its just best if you don't see me when I go
oh when I go

Damn It Man

What would it take for your heart to break?
what would it take for it to melt?
what would it take for a man to win?
He'd better be perfect as perfect can be, and not even know how to sin!

Damn it man, damn it man damn it man foiled again
cause I smoke too much, I drink  too much, I swear too much
and my life is riddled with sin
and there ain't no point in  playing a game you can't win

It seems so unlikely with the standards that you set
but I'll gladly shake the mans hand when those standards are met
and I hope to God, that your love is finally but that's never gonna happen if you never let your guard down

(chorus)

I'm throwing in the hat, no girl I am not playin'
cause there ain't no point in tryin'
for a dame you know that you'll never win
yeah there ain't no point in playing a game you can't win

The One I Left Behind

Do me a favor and make sure that you are heard
go on and make them feel every single word
and if they have the audacity to just get on up and leave
just play that song a little louder and maybe sing a tune for me

This one's for the one I loved thats no longer on my mind
but may just cross it from time to time
and this ones for the one I left who stole my every breath
but we unfortunately ran out of time
Yeah this ones for the one I left behind

Do me a favor and make sure that you are seen
and hell it don't matter if they all think your a little mean
do me a favor and make sure that they all see
every little part of everything that you could possibly be
and if they have the audacity to get on up and leave
just play that song a little louder and maybe sing a tune for me

(chorus)

so I'm gonna head out west and try to make my peace
and if it does not work I'll just head back out east
and I'm gonna run, run, run until one day you see
you were a fool, too have ever left me
and one day when you see
just play that song a little louder and maybe sing a tune for me

Wait Darlin'

Wait darlin' wait
for the dawn before you sleep
wait darlin' wait
one more kiss, one more drink

come tomorrow you'll be gone
you'll take my heart and take my song
come tomorrow you be gone, gone, gone, gone, gone
so long

you, you don't know
how I long or how I hope
you, you can't see
how our love, our love could be

(chorus)

Hell On Earth

I've been all over this country and if there's one thing i have learned
its that Hell is just a place and in my memory it is burned
and though I never thought I'd find it
and I never thought I'd see I think hell on earth just found me

and now I've been there and back more times than I would like to tell
so darlin' stay away from me and don't you ring that fucking  bell
and don't you tell your ma and pa exactly where it is I've been
cause i swear sister I am gonna go again

so stay away from me
stay away from me or darlin' stay the hell away from me
stay away from me its for your own safety
or darlin' stay the hell away from me

Cause I could not let something so beautiful be bruised or be torn
and I am sorry this is the oath that I have so sincerely sworn
so please for your own sake please won't you stay the hell away from me
cause i don't want hell on earth to find thee

(chorus)

Filling in the Gaps

I bet you don't remember, what day it is
and I bet you won't remember to call

so I'm filling in the spaces and I'm filling in the gaps
with other peoples voices, with other peoples acts
and I don't want you to notice and I don't want you to see
that you got under my skin that you got into me

with all the people around me
who try to love and support me
you'd think i could be happy
even if your not with me

(chorus)

and I don't know which way I should go but i don't think that its back to you
and I don't know which way I should run but I don't think that you are the one
who will be true

(chorus)

Oh That Lonesome Sound

I have a nasty habit i need to shake but I've no idea how long this is gonna take
I'm always leaving town without saying a word and its getting so goddamn absurd

i had a woman who swore she loved me but then she changed her mind and said that she had to go
she said she wants to settle down and raise a family in the deserts out in Idaho

and I never meant to live like I was a cowboy always living life on the run
I never meant to find myself with my face to the ground screaming oh my god that lonesome sound!

when I was young my ma, my ma she done told me
boy you'd best be careful with any woman that you meet
cause you'll probably find yourself some pretty little thing and that pretty little thing gonna make you bleed
and that pretty little girl is gonna make you bleed

so I hope that if you find somebody to love you
i hope that bastard breaks your heart and lets you down
and you find yourself alone in your room crying
screaming oh my god that lonesome sound, screaming oh my god that lonesome sound!

Fists up, Chin Down

I left her, and I'm not saying i regret it
but i paid dearly for it, now what am I to do?
when i drove down that lonesome highway
to find somebody new
I ended up across the country, by the time I got back she had
found somebody too
And what goes around always comes back to get at you

What goes around comes back to knock you down
so you had better keep your feet on solid ground
and what goes around comes back to knock you out
so keep your fists up, and your chin down, down, down, down, down

I'm sorry, you know i never meant to hurt her
and I wish i never met her, but what am I to do?
I'm sorry, I didn't know she was your sister
I didn't know she was your daughter
I can't even look at you
But I guess you gotta know it when the devils got a hold on you
And what goes around always comes back to get at you

(chorus)

As Long As This Thing's Flyin'

By the time the lightning struck
I'd just about had enough
Cause times are hard and times are rough
I'm moving on

And lord knows I have been around
but when I get back on the ground
I think I'll just stick my thumb out and hit the road
and even if I have to walk I'll go

And I'm just wishing you were by my side
And I don't know how long it'll take and I have no idea how far I'm gonna roam
but as long as that wheels turning I will go

Taking that ferry boat ride
over to the other side
and I just wish I had some place to go

Like over in that smaller town
on the other side of Puget Sound
where every body's smiling but there ain't no one i know

And I'm just wishing you were by my side
And I don't know how long it'll take and I have no idea how far I'm gonna roam
but as long as that ships sailing I will go

I was hoping for the rain
you were hoping for the sun
and I was that the storm
would give you good reason to run

And I have don't know how long it'll take and I have no idea how far I'm gonna roam
but as long as this thing's flying I will go
and as long at that ship's sailing I will
and as long as that wheel's turning I will go
